Spring Safety and Grounds Meeting

The corporate office in Braintree held the annual Spring Safety and Grounds Meeting on Thursday, April 7th for our maintenance managers, property managers, portfolio directors, and regional managers. Gary Saltmarsh, Director of Maintenance Operations, prepared an enjoyable and informative day for our employees.

John M. Corcoran & Company prides itself in our curb appeal, especially when it comes to flowers! Our arborist, Marc Colburn, has created a fantastic rotation of flower selections to be planted starting in the Spring months and all the way into the Fall so our properties always look fresh and beautiful with color. Marc covered best practices when it comes to rotating these plant selections throughout the seasons to keep all of our communities in tip-top shape.

The meeting also covered an extensive set of safety measures to ensure our maintenance teams are properly educated and trained across the portfolio. Gary spoke about the importance of our Environmental Health and Safety Policy,

OSHA Hazard Communications Safety Data Sheet, Edge2Learn, our online training platform, and a training on blood-borne pathogens.

Cynthia Buckley, Director of Marketing and Sales, presented the Meet the Mission awards for 2022. This was made so anyone can nominate a fellow employee for going above and beyond the expectations of his or her role and Cynthia shared the reasons why each recipient was nominated for the award. The recipients are pictured below from left to right: Virginia VanGorder (Property Manager, Massachusetts Mills), Michelle Dalton (Rental Manager, Kent Village Apartments), Alicia Lopez (Resident Services Coordinator, Canterbury Towers) Cassie Burke (Property Manager, Oxford & Essex Apartments), Amelia Davis (Rental Manager, Lincoln School Apartments), and Eleanor Cox (Rental Manager, Stevens Corner). Not pictured: Lisa Rodriguez. Each recipient will be awarded with a plaque and gift card to show our appreciation for their unwavering dedication and passion.

Patrice MacNeil, Human Resources/Workers Compensation Coordinator, explained the crucial aspects of workers compensation and our return to work policy so all of our maintenance staff can properly report any injuries and return back to work recovered and healthy.

Gary discussed bidding policies and procedures, energy and water protocols, and cost saving tips on invoice paying and review. He also invited Clean and Safe Inc. to attend the meeting as the company provides our maintenance teams with many great products. Gary also brought in Rob from Carpet King to discuss the 'dos and don'ts' when it comes to bidding on flooring which was very informative for all of our staff.

The Marketing Department also helped to set up a happy hour for our staff to enjoy and unwind after absorbing all of the information covered throughout the day. Everyone got to munch on snacks and freshly made popcorn while chatting with fellow employees. Each attendee also got a raffle ticket for the chance to win tickets to a Red Sox game or to participate in playing softball at Fenway Park with a friend. The raffle was drawn at the beginning of the happy hour and 3 winners claimed these great prizes!

TRIVIA: Gary created his own maintenance trivia question for the meeting, so I thought I would share to those who were unable to attend! He displayed a picture of the entire maintenance team from the year 1981. He asked everyone to guess which 3 maintenance members are still employees with us today. Can you name all 3 of these maintenance members?

3/21 Trivia Answer: The 7 federally protected groups are: Race (1968), Color (1968), National Origin (1968), Religion (1968), Sex (1974), Familial Status (1988), and Disability Status (1988)
